An uncanny narrative as a diptych that bridges two epochs. A historic moment frozen in time paired with a surgical dissection of time that transforms space into a fluid and ever changing dance of form and values.

Examine them closely to realize that every pixel and every frame is a testimony - an evidence of the boundless exploration of the human experience.

"It was just the wind"

I was drawn to this project because it treats a photograph not as a fixed object, but as something capable of transformation. By embracing the fluid nature of digital imagery, the work abstracts the image into its underlying pixel structure before gradually revealing it again through an ever-changing sequence. In doing so, it invites viewers to experience a photograph not as a static record, but as a process of emergence and discovery.

This artwork is a generative animation built on two grids of pixels of different sizes. Each pixel follows an autonomous cycle of appearing and disappearing, with variable waiting times determined randomly, generating an asynchronous movement of colours that appear and disappear over time.

The combination of grids with different densities, opacities, and timing patterns generates a complex visual texture in which the two layers overlap and interact with the photographic image, producing a continuous perceptual transformation. The viewer can interact with the artwork by clicking on the surface, outside the download area, to pause the animation, interrupting the flow of transitions and allowing for longer observation of one of the innumerable generated visual compositions.

P.S.

Nearly 11,000 feet up a long dirt road in the Colorado Rockies, I was searching for windswept ancient trees when I came upon the remnants of a Wild West mining site. The road seemed to end at a weathered directional sign leaning amid overgrown vegetation.

Coming from an extensive film and darkroom practice, I have been fascinated for decades by pixels as the building blocks of digital images. When I was approached by p.i.x.e.l.l.a.r.e. for this collaboration, I was deeply moved by his interpretation of my image. An artist I greatly respect and a master of the digital medium, he transformed a still photograph into an entirely new work while preserving the essence of the experience I had captured. In doing so, he revealed something that had always been present beneath the surface.

The wind that moves through the original photograph now moves through the digital medium.

Rather than simply animating the image, p.i.x.e.l.l.a.r.e. reconstructed the scene from its fundamental elements of light and shadow. Pixels pulse, shift, and realign, gradually revealing fragments of the title itself as they emerge from and dissolve back into the landscape. The photograph is continually broken apart and reassembled, inviting viewers to experience the image as a process of emergence and discovery.

The work expands the photograph without abandoning it. The landscape remains recognizable, yet continually transforms, as though the mountain air itself has entered the image and set it in motion.

It was just the wind.
